What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is defined as a high velocity, low amplitude thrust applied manually (by hand) or with an adjusting instrument to a specific joint in order to correct a subluxation.

In other words, through an evaluation of the joints, areas of restricted motion and misalignment are identified and a gentle force is applied in order to introduce movement back in to the joint. This not only helps reduce pain and inflammation, but also works to remove interference in the nervous system, ultimately allowing the body to function and heal optimally.

What to expect during your visit?

At your pet’s initial visit, there will be a thorough history taken and an examination performed by the chiropractor. The examination will look for any pain on palpation, assess range of motion of the neck, back, pelvis and extremities, detect any asymmetry in the vertebra of the spine, and evaluate muscle tone and gait.

Following your pet’s initial examination, Dr. Montano will review her examination findings with you, answer any questions that you may have, and will adjust your pet if she determines that chiropractic care is the best treatment option for them at that time.

Do you work on cats?

We love cats, but unfortunately chiropractors practicing animal chiropractic in Colorado are only able to adjust dogs and equids per the Chiropractors Practice Act.

How often should your pet get adjusted?

After the chiropractor examines your pet, she will create a treatment plan that is appropriate for your pet at the time. Some pets need more frequent care if there is a new issue or injury, while others need to be seen less often for maintenance and wellness type visits.  Either way, the chiropractor will recommend what she thinks is best, but you will not be required to purchase a membership or package. Each pet and situation is unique and their recommended treatment plan will reflect that.

How to know if your pet needs care?

Just like their owners, pet can benefit greatly from chiropractic care. But how does the owner know that their pet needs care? There are many signs and symptoms that your pet may display that could indicate that they need to be checked by a chiropractor. Some of these may include:

Neck, back, tail, and/or hip pain

Trouble getting up or down

Difficulty when jumping

Abnormal gait/limping

Change in behavior

Pain may not always be obvious, and signs can very from animal to animal. The chiropractor will perform a thorough examination in order to decide the best treatment plan for your pet. If the chiropractor determines that the signs and symptoms being displayed by your pet are outside of the scope of chiropractic, she will refer you out for further assessment by a veterinarian.
